The Food of Hong Kong

This blog post is dedicated to two of our best friends and the biggest foodies we know, Emi and Kyle. Check out there blog if you get a chance, so fun to read about all the different foods they are cooking, eating and enjoying! http://emiandkyleheartfood.blogspot.com/

Hong Kong has some of the BEST Chinese foods available as well as such a wonderful variety, from Chinese to Italian to French to Japanese and Korean, it has it all! Here are some shots of the delicious food we had during the weekend visit.

Could not resist, Emi and Kyle's last name is Suzuki and since we knew we would dedicate
the food blog to them.....is was just perfect to stumble upon this cafe.

Peking DUCK!! Peking Garden, amazing and rated one of the BEST peking duck restaurants in Hong Kong...YUM..MMY!!!!!

How to eat the duck, rice pancake, hoisin sauce, duck and green onion. Mouth watering good!

On our first full day in the city we sat down for a Korean BBQ lunch, it has been years since I've had Korean BBQ and I need to go back! SO GOOD! You pick out your raw meats and veggies and grill it up at the center of the table, once done, dip into your sauce and enjoy!

On Saturday night, we had the opportunity to dine at one of the top rated Cantonese restaurants in the world. Contemporary Cantonese fare prepared from fresh local delicacies at Lung King Heen, the world"s only Chinese restaurant with three Michelin stars, which features silver and glass accents to reflect Hong Kong’s glittering skyline. We had the chef's special, a 7 course surprise meal and WOWEEWOWAHHHHHH it was truly an experience. Thank you to Auntie and Uncle Richie for spoiling us with such a lavish and delicious meal! A big big big treat!

Over all, 2 1/2 days in Hong Kong and 5 pounds gained. What an amazing food experience and I look forward to our next trip back to continue trying all that Hong Kong has to offer! "BURP!"

Hong Kong with the Perkins

At the tail end of our trip we had the opportunity to visit one of the Booth's close family friends the Perkins. Graham and Tara are our dear friends who not only flew from Hong Kong to Seattle for our wedding, just for the weekend, but who we also consider our "god parents" in marriage (Filipino tradition). The Booths meet the Perkins while living in the Philippines over 14 years ago.....they have known Jamie since he had a squeaky voice at the age of 14!

We took a 20 minuet ferry from the main island to Discovery Bay or what I like to call "Magic Island." Magic Island is literally the PERFECT community for families. No cars are allowed, just golf carts and shuttle buses! And it is the perfect mix, not all expat families but a mix of Chinese and expats....perfect for the kids to be able to further there language education!

Graham and Jamie

LOVE the Perkin's golf cart, decorated with full Canadian Pride. Apparently Graham used to tie the Canadian Flag on the cart so that when he drove around it has it's cape flying in the wind

When we docked, we were greeted by Graham and his two incredibly smart and witty kids, Grace (9) and Greg (7). We only had a short time so we toured the community (think modern red bricks in a courtyard full of restaurants, pubs, and doctor offices). Then sat and enjoyed a yummy Italian dinner to catch up. It was fantastic to be able to see Graham, Tara unfortunatlywas home sick with the bug so we were unable to see her, but it was wonderful to catch up! Gracie and Greg are quite the kids, spending the first 3 years of there schooling in full Mandarin, I hope that our kids someday will pick up as languages too!

Thanks Graham, Grace and Greg for the wonderful hospitality, we look forward to seeing you all soon!!

Hong Kong at Lan Kwai Fong

"It all started in the 80's with the opening of the original California Restaurant, treating everyone in Hong Kong to the finest Burger in town. The overwhelming success of the place spawned growth for great food and fun in the area. Today diners are spoilt for choice: there are award winning restaurants including French & Italian fine dining, Western specialties such as Russian, Nordic, Australian and Spanish cuisine, Asian fare offering Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Japanese plus everything in between. From exciting supper clubs, casual delis, places for quick bites to inviting alfresco dining, Lan Kwai Fong has it all"

"When it comes to nightlife, this is the "MUST" place to be. Venture down Lan Kwai Fong to find yourself in the centre of the city's hottest, trendiest night spots. Mingle with celebrities and local trend setters at sleek and sexy clubs. Dance till dawn as international DJ's spin the turntables with hip and funky music vibes. Hang out with friends in traditional watering holes offering an intense selection of beers and ales. Shake it all up at tropical bars as bartenders serve up colourful and exotic cocktail mixes. "

We spent our first night in Hong Kong enjoying the sites and drinks at Lan Kwai Fong.....Amazing on going street party......

Hong Kong Part 1

Hong Kong, AMAZING! What a city! In the heart of the island, it is literally building on top of another building. I wish I had a better photo to describe the skyline but this is the best I could get. Jamie and I took a last minute trip to Hong Kong to visit my parents who have been travelling around for the past few weeks (mostly in the Philippines). We could not say no to this opportunity to see Hong Kong! Thanks mom and dad for sending us over!

on our way to Kowloon

My dad's facial expression when I say something that annoys him......great photo catch Jamie!

We spent most of our Saturday eating, but in the in-between times we went shopping and touring. We spent the morning touring Kowloon which is a 7 minuet ferry ride from the Central Business District (Hong Kong Island is a similar concept to Manhattan NYC). After lunch we had to split off into smaller groups (there were 7 of us and too many people with too many ideas of what we wanted to do) so Jamie and I stole my mom for the afternoon and put her on a bus! This might be her first bus ride in 20 years but she very much enjoyed the experience. We took a 20 minuet bus ride to the other side of Hong Kong island to Stanley Market. I did not know what to expect, nor did I realize how big this island was, as most of the “action” is located on such a “small” condensed stripe. Stanley Market was awesome! Lush, green, BEACHES and quaint little towns. Can you imagine that just through the tunnel onto the other side of Hong Kong is this amazing small town feel?

Market shopping mayhem!

Hong Kong has this vibe about it that I cannot describe. Many people told us that Singapore was so sterile, lacking culture and I never understood what they meant, until now. The city feels so much more alive! Jaime described it as Hong Kong is like Manhattan as Singapore is to Boston (i’ve never been to Boston but I can kinda understand what he means). Despite the city, I loved the weather! It was so refreshing to have a chilly rainy day, it reminded me of home and we had to stop at a cafe to sip a foamy latte to warm up. I miss having 4 seasons!

DUCK!!

Apparently in Hong Kong there are 24 1/2 hours in the day?

Auntie and Uncle Richie

I loved Hong Kong and I am VERY much looking forward to another trip back to further explore! Until the next time.....

Hong Kong

The Booths are Hong Kong Bound!

I am SO excited for my first trip to Hong Kong this weekend. My mom and dad along with my brother Robbie and my aunt and uncle are all spending a few days there, touring, eating, shopping and more eating! So Jamie and I thought, hmmm we need to see them AND I need to see the city! Only a quick plane ride away (about 3 hours) I am not only excited to eat the amazing food and see the city but I am really excited for cooler weather! Looking forward to a few days away from the humidity! Singapore is going into its “summer” season and boy oh boy, it is TOO HOT AND HUMID, almost unbearable!!!! If anyone has any tips of what we cannot miss seeing or eating.....let me know!

Will post photos when we are return, and I desperately need to add our recent trips to Manila too! YIKES I am behind!

Olympics 2010 - GOLD!!!

Well well after a very very long absence from blogging, we are finally BACK!

So much to catch up on but our most exciting entry at the moment are the 2010 Winter Olympics! Jamie just returned from his trip home, one week of work work work and then heading off to Van City for the much anticipated Winter Games. More importantly, our cousin Ashleigh was skiing, representing Canada on its Olympic Debut of Skier Cross. Skier Cross is an intense, fast paced free style race where 4 competitors in each heat race down the track, with sharp angle turns, huge jumps and intense speed, it is definitely a fun sport to watch!

Ashleigh racing down during the qualifying rounds

GOLD!!!!

What a wonderful treat for Jamie, and for all of the Booth’s, to see their cousin win the GOLD!!! Congrats Ashleigh!!! Best of luck (and have fun) at the upcoming World Cup! We look forward to cheering you on in Russia for the 2014 games!!
